.io domain registration from Pakistan
.io is the two-letter country code of the British Indian Ocean Territory, a group of islands with no permanent civilian population. Software teams around the world adopted it because it reads like "input/output". The company behind it is based in England, belongs to Identity Digital, and accepts applications from any country, Pakistan included.
Price and how to order
Loading the current .io price…
Search any name on the availability checker, or go straight to the order form. We confirm availability before registering, you pay in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa, and the domain is registered in your own name.
Who uses .io
- Software houses and SaaS products
- Start-ups pitching to overseas clients
- Developer tools, APIs and open-source projects
- Freelance developers building a personal brand
- Browser games and side projects
Most of Pakistan's software exporters sell to clients abroad, and .io signals "tech product" to a buyer in London or Dubai faster than .com.pk does. A Lahore team shipping an invoicing API, or a Karachi start-up pitching to foreign investors, usually wants a short brand on .io. The registry sets no residency or document test, so we can file in your own name or your SECP-registered company's name through a registrar, confirm the name is free first, and take payment in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa. .io is not a PKNIC domain, so the two-year .pk minimum does not apply.
Eligibility and rules
Who may register: Open to anyone, anywhere. The registry's allocation rules (3.1) say an applicant for a second-level name "may reside in any legal jurisdiction". Only third-level names under the registry's own sub-domains (such as com.io) need an applicant resident in the British Indian Ocean Territory.
- Second-level names are open to applicants in any country (allocation rules 3.1). Third-level names under the registry's sub-domains need an applicant resident in the British Indian Ocean Territory and at least one nameserver physically in the territory (rules 4.1 and 4.7).
- Names must follow the DNS standards in RFCs 1034, 1035, 1122 and 1123 (rules 2.3), which allow letters, digits and hyphens with no label longer than 63 characters. Certain single-letter, multi-letter and numeric second-level names are held back and allocated by the registry in a controlled manner (rules 3.2). No IDN table for .io is lodged with IANA, so treat non-ASCII names as unsupported unless your registrar confirms otherwise.
- The fee covers one year for each new registration and one year for each renewal (terms 2.2). Fees are non-refundable, and no refund is due once the name is on the Register (terms 2.2 and 13).
- At least two nameservers, named in the application and already operating, are needed. For second-level names they may sit anywhere in the world (rules 3.3).
- The applicant and contacts consent to their names and contact details being held on the public Register of .IO Domain Names. If that consent is withheld or withdrawn, the agent who filed the name must end the registration (terms 3). NIC.IO does not verify the data, but false details can lead to cancellation without refund (terms 4 and 11.2).
- Names go first come, first served (terms 14). The registry may refuse any application, in which case the fee is returned (terms 11). English law governs, and disputes run under the .IO Dispute Resolution Policy (terms 5 and 22). The registry publishes no renewal grace, redemption or transfer-lock timings; those sit with the registrar.
Questions about .io
Is .io going to be shut down because of the Chagos Islands deal?
Not on any current timetable. The UK and Mauritius signed a treaty on 22 May 2025 to hand the territory to Mauritius, but it is not in force: in April 2026 the UK shelved the bill needed to implement it after the United States withheld its consent. A country code is only retired if it leaves the ISO 3166-1 list, and ICANN confirmed in November 2024 that "IO" remains on it. Even then IANA's rules give a five-year run-down, extendable by up to five more years. Identity Digital told The Register in October 2024 that it would keep operating .io.
Can a person or company in Pakistan register a .io domain?
Yes. The registry's allocation rules say an applicant may reside in any legal jurisdiction, and its home page says you do not need to live in the territory. No CNIC, SECP or FBR paperwork is asked for by the registry; you do need accurate contact details, because a name registered with false information can be cancelled.
Who actually runs .io?
Internet Computer Bureau Ltd, an English company that IANA lists as the sponsoring organisation and that runs the registry website as NIC.IO. It is part of Identity Digital, the US registry group that also owns Name.com, which provides the registrar services behind nic.io. The same company runs .ac and .sh.
For how many years can I register a .io name?
The registry's terms price each registration and renewal per year, so one year is the minimum. The registry does not publish a maximum; registrars we have checked offer terms of up to ten years. Prices are on our price list at /pricing/, or ask on WhatsApp if a term is not listed.
Will my name and address show in WHOIS?
The registry's terms say applicants and contacts consent to their details being held on the public Register, and that withdrawing consent ends the registration. Whether your registrar redacts any of it in the public lookup is a registrar-level matter; ask us before you file if this matters to you.
How do I buy a .io domain through SastiDomains?
Send us the exact name you want. We check availability, confirm the price in PKR, and once your bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa payment arrives we aim to file it through a registrar the same working day, registered in your name, not ours.
