Do new extensions like .shop and .online work?
Yes, they work. They are real internet addresses. Google says it treats any extension that resolves through the IANA root zone as a generic one, unless it is a country extension. What matters more is whether your customers trust the name and whether you can afford the renewal price in year two.
What Google says about new extensions
Many owners fear that a new extension hurts search ranking. Google's documentation says it treats any extension that resolves through the IANA DNS root zone as a generic top-level domain. A few country extensions, such as .tv and .me, are also treated as generic.
So .shop, .online and .store sit in the same group as .com, as far as Google's country handling goes. Country extensions like .pk are different, because they send a strong country signal.
If you want Pakistani visitors from a generic extension, tell Google yourself. Set an explicit country target using the methods in Search Central. Good content, fast pages and honest links still decide your position, not the letters after the dot.
Where these extensions came from
These names are not a trick or a loophole. ICANN, the body that coordinates the domain system, opened applications for new extensions on 12 January 2012. The first ones were delegated in October 2013, and many more have followed.
They sit in the same root system as every other extension, so websites and email work on them as normal.
Check the name you want in our search at /domains/ and browse the list at /extensions/. Availability differs by extension, so we check it live for each search rather than assume.
Will Pakistani customers trust them?
Here we must be honest. Search engines are fairly relaxed, but people may not be. Some buyers may expect .com or .pk, because they see those most often. We have no survey to quote, so test it yourself.
A new extension can still work well when the name explains itself. A shop called yourbrand.shop tells a buyer what to expect. A confusing name with a strange extension does not.
Ask a few real customers whether they would type it from memory. If they hesitate, keep the .com or .pk and use the new extension as a redirect or a campaign page. Compare the options in /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/.
The renewal price trap
The bigger risk is money. Some new extensions are sold with a low first-year offer, then renew at a higher rate. Read the renewal price before you pay, not only the first-year price.
Your brand sits on that name. Once you have business cards, listings and customers, moving is costly. A low first-year price can turn into a yearly bill you did not plan for.
Before you buy, write down three numbers: year-one price, year-two renewal and the transfer cost. Ask us for current rates on WhatsApp or see /pricing/. We will not quote a figure we cannot confirm for your chosen extension.
- Ask for the renewal price in writing
- Check if the offer price applies only once
- Make sure you can afford year five, not just year one
When .pk or .com may suit you better
Some businesses should skip new extensions. If you serve mainly Pakistani buyers and want a local feel, look at .pk or .com.pk. PKNIC fixes the registrant name at registration and the minimum term is two years. Its fee is Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026, and USD 15.99 per year for overseas registrants.
Those fees are set by PKNIC, which makes planning easier. Read more at /pk-domain/ and /com-pk-domain/.
If you want to reach customers abroad, /com-domain/ is a familiar choice. A new extension suits a side project, a campaign, or a brand where the word itself carries the meaning.
How we can help you decide
We are a small Pakistani company. We register new names in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar, and we also run a marketplace where owners sell existing names with payment held in escrow.
If you like a name but want a different extension, check /#browse for names already for sale. If you want to register fresh, start at /order/.
You pay in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa, and we handle sales on WhatsApp. We aim to file the same working day your payment arrives. Unpaid orders cancel after 48 hours. If the name is taken before we file, you get a full refund.
Common questions
Do .shop and .online domains rank lower on Google?
Google's documentation does not say new extensions are marked down. It treats any extension in the IANA root zone as generic, the same group as .com. Content quality and links still decide your position.
Are new extensions usable for email?
Yes. They sit in the same root system as other extensions, so email works once the right records are set up. Your mail host will give you the settings.
Should I pick a new extension over .com?
Only if the name is clear and you have checked the renewal price. If your buyers expect .com or .pk, one of those may carry less risk.
Can I check availability for these extensions with you?
Yes. Use /domains/ to search any extension. We check availability live, and if a name is taken before we file, you get a full refund.
