.pk vs .com.pk vs .com: which domain should a Pakistani business pick?

If your customers are in Pakistan, a .pk is the sound first choice, with .com.pk as the fallback when the .pk is taken or your name is under four characters: Google reads both as Pakistan sites, PKNIC charges a fixed rupee fee, and your name is more likely to be free. Pick .com first if your clients are mostly abroad, as with freelancers and exporters. If the budget allows, register both and redirect one to the other.

What the three endings are

.pk is Pakistan's country-code top-level domain. PKNIC, based in Lahore, runs the registry for it and for the third-level zones under it: .com.pk, .net.pk, .org.pk, .biz.pk, .web.pk, .fam.pk, .edu.pk and the government zones. A name registered directly under .pk (yourshop.pk) must be at least four characters before the dot. A .com.pk name can be as short as one character. PKNIC describes .com.pk as the zone for general business or individuals, .net.pk for network-related business and .org.pk for non-profit organisations. .com is a generic top-level domain run by Verisign under agreements with ICANN and the US government. It is not tied to any country, and anyone, anywhere, can register one through an ICANN-accredited registrar.

Trust: what the ending tells a customer

A customer in Faisalabad about to pay through JazzCash wants to know the business is in Pakistan. A .pk or .com.pk address says that before they read a word, and it says someone paid PKNIC for at least two years, which filters out throwaway sites. .com.pk is the more familiar pattern, so it reads as established; a bare .pk is shorter and looks newer, though some customers may still type .com.pk from habit. .com signals reach rather than place. If your buyers are in Dubai, London or Toronto, a .com avoids the question of why a Pakistani address is selling to them. The ending proves nothing on its own. Trust still comes from a real address, a working phone number, your SECP or FBR details on the site, and reviews.

SEO: a ccTLD targets Pakistan, a gTLD targets nothing

Google's own guidance says a country-code domain gives a strong signal to users and search engines that the site is meant for that country. So a .pk or .com.pk site is treated as a Pakistan site with no setting needed. That helps when your buyers search from Pakistan and may hurt a little when they do not, because Google is less likely to show a Pakistani site to someone in Germany. A .com carries no location signal. Google treats generic domains as not associated with any place, so to target Pakistan on a .com you have to say so through locale-specific URLs and hreflang tags. Neither ending ranks higher by itself. Content, speed, links and reviews decide rankings. The domain only decides which country Google thinks you are talking to.

Price and term

PKNIC lists one domain fee, set by where the registrant is based rather than by zone: Rs 2,100 per year for registrants in Pakistan, up from Rs 1,800 since 1 August 2026, and US$15.99 per year for registrants outside Pakistan. The fee is billed in two-year blocks, so your first term is two years, and you can pay up to ten years in advance. Verisign, the .com registry, charges registrars US$10.26 per year for a new registration or renewal, rising to US$10.97 on 1 November 2026. Registrars add their margin, and the rupee rate moves the final figure. Those are registry prices, not ours. Our prices are on /pricing/ and we quote on WhatsApp where a price is not yet set. We take payment in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa.

Availability and the rules that bite later

.com has been open to the world for decades, so short, plain English names are mostly taken. Far fewer names sit under .pk, so yours is more likely to be free as a .pk or .com.pk. Check both on /domains/ before you print anything, and try /ideas/ if your first choice is gone. Two PKNIC rules matter later. The registrant record is locked after registration. Changing the owner name means posting original documents to PKNIC in Lahore: an authority letter on letterhead with the signatory's CNIC copy for a company, or an affidavit on Rs 100 stamp paper for an individual. So register in the right name from day one, which is why we file in your name, not ours. In a .pk dispute, a trade-name claim counts only if the name is registered with an official office in Pakistan.

A decision rule by business type

Ask one question: where are the people who pay you? If they are in Pakistan, start with a Pakistani ending. If they are abroad, start with .com. Add the other when the budget allows.

  • Shop, clinic, school, restaurant or local service in one city (Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Peshawar, Quetta): .pk if the name is four characters or more and free, otherwise .com.pk.
  • SECP-registered company selling across Pakistan: .com.pk or .pk as the main site, plus the .com to block copycats.
  • Freelancer or agency with clients abroad: .com, because a .pk tells Google to show you to people in Pakistan.
  • Online store shipping inside Pakistan, paid by JazzCash, Easypaisa or cash on delivery: .pk, plus .com if free.
  • Startup planning to sell outside Pakistan: .com first, .pk as a defensive copy.
  • NGO, trust or society: .org.pk.

Why registering both usually makes sense

If the .com and the .pk of your name are both free, taking both costs one more registration and saves an argument later. Point one at the other with a redirect, so customers who type either ending land on the same site. The .pk protects your name in Pakistan under PKNIC's dispute rules, and the .com stops a rival or a squatter from trading on your name abroad. Remember the .pk comes as a two-year block, so budget for that. We confirm availability before filing, register each name in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar, and aim to file the same working day the payment arrives. Start on /order/, or use /pk-domain-transfer/ if a .pk you already own needs to come across.

Common questions

Can I register a name directly under .pk, or do I need .com.pk?

Yes. PKNIC allows general second-level .pk names as long as the part before .pk is at least four characters. .com.pk allows names as short as one character and is meant for general business or individuals.

Do .pk and .com.pk cost different amounts?

Not at the registry. PKNIC's price list does not split by zone; it sets one domain fee by where the registrant is based, Rs 2,100 per year for registrants in Pakistan, billed two years at a time. Our price for each is on /pricing/.

What is the minimum term for a .pk domain?

Two years. PKNIC collects its fee in advance for a two-year period, and you can prepay up to ten years. Our .com terms are on /pricing/.

Can I change the owner of a .pk domain later?

Only with paperwork. The registrant record is locked, and PKNIC asks for original documents by post: an authority letter and CNIC copy for a company, or an affidavit on Rs 100 stamp paper for an individual. Register in the correct name from the start.

Does a .pk domain rank lower than .com on Google?

No. Google says a country domain is a strong signal that the site is meant for that country, which helps for searches from Pakistan. Neither ending ranks higher on its own; content and links do that.

Can a foreigner or overseas Pakistani register a .pk?

Yes. PKNIC's policy says there is no local-presence requirement. Registrants outside Pakistan pay US$15.99 per year instead of the rupee rate.
