Domain for a YouTube channel or blog: how to choose and connect one

A domain for a YouTube channel or blog is a web address you own, such as yourname.com, that you can put in your channel links, bio and email. Pick a short name that matches your channel or blog, check it is free, and register it in your own name. Then add it as a link in YouTube Studio or connect it to Blogger.

Why a creator needs their own domain

A domain for a YouTube channel gives you one address that stays yours, whatever happens on any platform. Platforms can change their layout, cut your reach or lock an account. A domain you own keeps working.

With a domain you can build a small home page, collect emails, and show one clean link in every bio. You can also set up an email like hello@yourname.com, which looks more serious to sponsors than a free mail address.

  • One link for Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and YouTube bios
  • A home for your own audience, not only the platform's
  • A professional email for brand deals
  • A name nobody else can register while you hold it

Naming rules for a channel or blog domain

A good domain name for a blog or channel follows a few plain rules. Keep it short. Make it easy to say out loud, because many viewers hear your name in a video before they type it.

Avoid hyphens, numbers and unusual spellings. If you have to spell it twice, change it. Use the same name as your channel handle where you can, so people find you everywhere. Check that nobody else already uses a similar name or trademark, so you do not face trouble later.

Our full list of rules is on our guide “Domain name rules: length, characters, hyphens and what you cannot register”, and for brainstorming see our guide “Domain name ideas for a Pakistani business (with examples)” and our guide “Why Short Domain Names Cost More”.

  • Short and easy to spell
  • No hyphens or digits
  • Matches your channel name or handle
  • Not copied from a known brand

Picking a domain name for a blogger

If you are a blogger, think about what readers will remember. Your own name works well for a personal blog. A topic name works for a niche, such as food, cricket or study tips, but it is harder to make memorable.

Write five options, say each aloud, and drop any that sound like another site. Then test them with our availability tool at our guide “How to check if a domain name is available (and why "available" is not a promise)”. If your first choice is taken, add a small word or try another extension, or look at our guide “How to buy a domain that is already taken” when the owner may sell.

If you want more ideas, the name idea tool can help you shape a name from keywords.

Which extension suits creators

The extension is the ending of the address. For creators, the common choices are .com, .pk, .me and .tv.

A .com is widely recognised and is a safe default for an international audience; see the .com page. A .pk shows a Pakistani base, which suits a local audience; see the .pk page. Names directly under .pk need at least four characters, so a very short channel name may not fit. A .me works well for a personal brand; see the .me page. Compare them on the list of extensions and our guide “.pk vs .com.pk vs .com: which domain should a Pakistani business pick?”.

Do not buy five endings out of fear. One good domain you actually use is better than a pile you never connect.

Adding your domain to YouTube

YouTube lets you add links to your channel profile. According to YouTube Help, you sign in to YouTube Studio, open Customization, then Profile, and add a new link under Links. Enter a title and your URL, then publish.

YouTube says you can show up to 14 links, and your first link appears prominently near the Subscribe button. So put your domain first. Links must follow YouTube's external links policy.

If you want one short address that sends people to your channel, see our guide “Point your domain to Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp”. It explains how a domain can point to a social page.

Connecting your domain to Blogger

Blogger supports custom domains. Google's help page describes the steps: in Blogger pick your blog, open Settings, then Publishing, then Custom domain, and enter your domain. Blogger then shows two CNAME records, which you add in your domain's DNS settings. Wait at least an hour, then repeat the custom domain step.

The first CNAME points a name such as www to ghs.google.com. The second is unique to your blog, so copy the exact values Blogger shows. Google says the switch from your blogspot.com address can take up to 24 hours.

We explain this in simpler words, with the common mistakes, at our guide “How to use a custom domain on Blogger”. For DNS terms, read our guide “DNS records explained: A, CNAME, MX and TXT”. Note that we register domains only; we do not sell hosting, so Blogger or another platform stays your home for the blog.

How we register it for you

We are a small Pakistani company that works online. We have no office. Our registration service checks availability live and registers your domain in your own name, through PKNIC or an accredited registrar. We are not PKNIC.

You pay in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa. Sales run on WhatsApp. We aim to file the same working day the payment arrives. Unpaid orders cancel after 48 hours, and you get a full refund if the name is taken before we file.

For a .pk, PKNIC fixes the registrant name at registration, so give your real details correctly. See the price list for prices, the order form to start, and our guide “How to buy a domain in Pakistan with JazzCash, Easypaisa, Raast or bank transfer” for payment help. We also cover our guide “How to set up business email on your own domain” in a guide, though we do not sell email hosting.

Common questions

What domain name should I use for my YouTube channel?

Use your channel name or a close match, kept short and easy to spell. Avoid hyphens and numbers. Check the name on our guide “How to check if a domain name is available (and why "available" is not a promise)” before you commit.

Do I need a domain to run a YouTube channel?

No, YouTube works without one. A domain is useful because you own it, can use it in your channel links and bio, and can build a website or email around it.

How do I choose a domain name for a blog?

Pick something short, memorable and easy to say aloud. Use your own name or a clear topic word. Skip hyphens, digits and odd spellings. See our guide “Domain name rules: length, characters, hyphens and what you cannot register” for the full list.

Can I use my own domain on Blogger?

Yes. Blogger's help page describes a custom domain setting under Settings and Publishing, with two CNAME records added at your domain provider. Our guide at our guide “How to use a custom domain on Blogger” walks through it.

Should a blogger choose .com or .pk?

A .com suits a wide, international audience. A .pk suits readers in Pakistan. Both work; choose by who you write for. Compare them on our guide “.pk vs .com.pk vs .com: which domain should a Pakistani business pick?”.

Can one domain point to my YouTube or Instagram page?

Yes, a domain can redirect to a social page. This gives you a short address to say in videos. See our guide “Point your domain to Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp”.

Do you sell website hosting or design for creators?

No. We register domains and run a marketplace for existing ones. We do not sell hosting, website design, SSL or Google Workspace.
