.io, .ai or .com for a Pakistani startup?

For most Pakistani startups, a .com is the safest main address because customers, investors and email systems all expect it. A .io or .ai can work well as a second name for a tech or AI product, but check the renewal price first. The long-term future of .io is also not settled.

Start with the question: who needs to trust you?

Before comparing extensions, decide who must find and trust your startup. Customers in Pakistan, overseas clients and investors each notice different things.

A .com is the extension most people type by default. If a customer guesses your address, they will almost always guess .com. That matters more than any trend.

A .io or .ai tells people you build software or AI. That helps with a developer audience, but it can confuse a buyer who runs a shop or a clinic and expects an ordinary business address.

If you are unsure, compare extensions side by side on /extensions/ and read /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/ to see where a local name still makes sense.

Price and minimum terms

We do not quote .io or .ai prices here, because they change often and differ by registrar. Check the live price for each extension on /domains/ before you decide, and look at the renewal line, not only the first-year line.

One fixed rule we can state: a .pk or .com.pk name has a two-year minimum term. PKNIC's fee is Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026, and USD 15.99 per year for overseas registrants.

For a startup, that matters if you want a local name as well as a global one. See /pk-domain-price/ for a plain breakdown, and /pricing/ for how we charge in rupees.

How investors and partners read each extension

There is no official ranking of extensions among investors. What follows is our own view, not a statistic.

A .com suggests a company that plans to last. A .io or .ai suggests a product-led team, which many software founders like.

Investors usually look first at whether the name is clear, easy to say aloud and free of confusion with another brand. A weak name on a good extension still loses to a strong name on .com.

Whatever you pick, make sure the domain is registered in your own company name. We cover why in /buy-domain/.

Availability and the aftermarket

Short .com names are mostly taken. That pushes founders towards .io and .ai, where more good names may look free. Do not assume this. Check live availability on /domains/ and try variations through /ideas/.

If the .com you want is already owned, you do not have to give up on it. Our marketplace lets owners sell existing domains with payment held in escrow, so you can browse /#browse for a ready name. To judge a fair price, read /domain-value/.

Be careful with names that are near copies of a well-known brand. They can cause trouble later, whatever the extension.

The .io future question

The .io extension belongs to the British Indian Ocean Territory. In October 2024 the UK and Mauritius announced a treaty to transfer sovereignty of that territory to Mauritius.

IANA says on its website that a change of sovereignty should lead to the retirement of a country code. ICANN relies on the ISO 3166-1 standard, which still lists IO. If the code were removed, a retirement process of about five years would follow, as reported, and owners might have to move to another name.

Later reports suggest the treaty has not yet taken effect, so check current news. Nobody can say for certain what will happen. If you use .io, own the matching .com or keep a plan to move, and avoid printing the address on products that last for years.

Renewal costs and a sensible plan

Many extensions advertise a low first year, then charge more at renewal. Write down the renewal price before you pay anything, and put the date in your calendar.

A simple plan for a small startup is to register the .com if you can get it, add .ai or .io only if your product truly fits, and redirect the extras to the main site.

If you want help, message us on WhatsApp. We aim to file the same working day the payment arrives, and you can pay by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa. Start at /order/ or read /guides/ for more.

Common questions

Is .ai good for a Pakistani startup?

It suits products built around artificial intelligence, because the extension signals that at once. For a general business, a .com is usually the clearer choice. Check the renewal price first.

Will .io stop working?

Nobody can say for certain. IANA says a change of sovereignty should lead to retirement, while ICANN points to the ISO 3166-1 standard, which still lists the code. If you use .io, keep a plan to move.

Can I register .io or .ai through SastiDomains?

We check availability live on /domains/ and register new names in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar. Search the extension there to see if it is offered and at what price.

What is the minimum term for a .pk name?

Two years. PKNIC's fee is Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026, and USD 15.99 per year for overseas ones.

Should I buy .com, .io and .ai together?

Usually not. Start with the one that fits your audience, and add others only to protect your brand or to redirect visitors.
