Does a country domain help you rank in that country?

Yes, it helps. Google describes a country-code domain such as .pk as a strong sign that a site is meant for that country. A .com can still reach Pakistani customers, but you must show the country in other ways. Neither choice ranks you alone. Content and trust still decide who wins.

What Google says about country domains

Google reads a country-code domain (ccTLD) as a strong sign of the country a site is meant for. For a .pk name, that country is Pakistan. A shop on a .pk address starts with that signal in place.

Think of it as targeting, not a ranking prize. A .pk name will not lift a weak page above a strong one. It helps Google decide where your site is relevant. After that, your content, speed and reputation decide how high you appear.

What counts as a country domain

Not every two-letter ending points to a country. Google treats some of them, including .tv and .me, as generic, because they are used more for branding than for place. Google says that list may change.

For Pakistan, the country endings are .pk and the names under it, such as .com.pk. Our guide at /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/ explains how they differ, and /extensions/ lists what else you can register.

Using a .com to reach Pakistan

A .com is not tied to any place. So you have to show Google which country you serve. Google says this is not an exact science, so expect some visitors to land on the wrong version.

Useful signals for a Pakistani business include:

  • Prices in rupees and a Pakistani phone number on your pages.
  • A local address and the names of the cities you serve.
  • Links from other Pakistani websites.
  • hreflang tags, if you run separate versions for different languages or regions.
  • Fast loading for visitors in Pakistan.

Signals that Google ignores

Some old tricks do nothing. Google ignores location meta tags and similar location attributes in your page code.

Server location counts as a signal, but not a firm one, because many sites are served through networks that sit far from the host. So do not pay for Pakistani hosting just to rank, and do not stuff location tags into your pages. Put your effort into content that names your city, your customers and your services in plain words.

When to own both .pk and .com

Many owners do well with both. Use .pk when your customers are in Pakistan and you want the clearest local signal. Use .com when you serve clients abroad or want a name that feels global, as freelancers often do.

Owning both also stops someone else taking the twin of your brand. Point one to the other, or run each for its own market. If you are starting out, search names at /domains/ and compare costs at /pricing/. Our /pk-domain/ and /com-domain/ pages cover each in detail.

Registering a .pk through us

PKNIC fixes the owner name on a .pk or .com.pk at registration, and the minimum term is two years. PKNIC's fee is Rs 2,100 per year for registrants based in Pakistan from 1 August 2026, and USD 15.99 per year for overseas registrants.

We are a small Pakistani company, not a registrar and not connected to PKNIC. We check availability live and register the name in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar. You pay in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa, and we aim to file the same working day payment arrives. Unpaid orders cancel after 48 hours, and you get a full refund if the name is taken before we file. Start at /order/.

Common questions

Will a .pk domain rank me higher in Pakistan?

It gives Google a clear sign that your site is for Pakistan, which helps with relevance. It does not lift you above stronger pages, so content and trust still matter.

Can a .com rank in Pakistan?

Yes. A .com is not tied to a place, so show your market with rupee prices, local contact details, local links and content about your city.

Does hosting in Pakistan help my ranking?

Only a little. Google treats server location as a signal that is not definitive, so do not choose hosting for ranking reasons alone.

Should I buy both .pk and .com?

Often yes, if you serve both Pakistani and overseas customers or want to protect your brand. If budget is tight, start with the one that matches your main market.
