.com vs .net vs .org: which should you pick?
For most Pakistani businesses and freelancers, .com is the safe first choice because people type it by habit. Pick .net only if the .com is taken and the .net name is still clean, and pick .org for non-profits, communities and similar groups. Check the exact renewal price before you register, because it can differ from the first-year price.
What each one was meant for
The three names were set up in the early days of the internet. The old rules document, RFC 1591, gave each a job. .com was for commercial entities. .net was meant to hold only the computers of network providers. .org was the miscellaneous domain for organisations that did not fit anywhere else.
Those rules have loosened a lot. Today anyone can usually register any of the three. The original purpose is history, but it still shapes how people read each ending.
How people see them today
Perception matters more than history. A customer who hears your name will usually add .com without thinking. That habit is the main reason .com is valued.
Here is how the three tend to read in practice. This is our view, not a measured statistic.
- **.com:** the default. Looks like a normal business.
- **.net:** often seen as a second choice. Fine for tech, hosting or network-style services.
- **.org:** reads as a cause, charity, club or community project. A shop on .org can look odd.
Who runs them, and what that means
IANA lists VeriSign Global Registry Services as the manager of both .com and .net, and Public Interest Registry as the manager of .org. All three are labelled generic top-level domains.
For you, the practical point is simple. These are global names, not Pakistan-specific ones. Rules, pricing and renewal terms come from the registry and the company you register through, not from PKNIC. If you want a Pakistan-specific name instead, read /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/ for how .pk and .com.pk compare with .com.
Price and renewal: what to check
We will not quote a single price for these three here, because registrar prices change and renewal is often higher than the first year. Always ask for the first-year price and the renewal price together, and in rupees.
For comparison, .pk and .com.pk have a fixed PKNIC fee of Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026, with a two-year minimum term. You can see current figures for all extensions on /pricing/ and /pk-domain-price/. Check that the quote includes registration in your own name.
When each one makes sense
Choose by your goal, not by habit alone.
If a name you want is taken, do not settle for a worse spelling. Search other extensions at /domains/ or get ideas at /ideas/.
- **Choose .com** for a shop, agency, freelance portfolio or any business that sells to the public. See /com-domain/.
- **Choose .net** when the .com is owned by someone else, the .net name is clear and there is no confusing brand on the .com.
- **Choose .org** for a charity, NGO, school society, community group or open project.
- **Consider .pk or .com.pk** if your customers are mainly in Pakistan. See /com-pk-domain/.
Mistakes to avoid and how we help
Do not register a .net just to copy a famous .com. It sends visitors to your rival and may cause legal trouble. Do not pick .org for a profit-making shop only because it looks trustworthy.
We are a small Pakistani company. We check availability live and register new domains in your own name, through PKNIC for .pk names or through a registrar for others. If the name you want is already owned, our marketplace at /#browse lets owners sell with payment held in escrow. You can pay by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa, and we handle orders on WhatsApp. Start at /order/ or read /guides/.
Common questions
Is .com always better than .net or .org?
Not always, but it is the safest default for a business because people type it automatically. .org suits non-profits and communities, and .net can work when the .com is unavailable.
Can a business use .org?
Usually yes, as the registry rules have loosened. It may confuse customers though, because .org is mostly linked with charities and groups.
Do .com, .net and .org cost the same?
Not necessarily. Prices vary by registrar and renewal can differ from the first year, so ask for both prices before paying.
Will the domain be in my name if I order from SastiDomains?
Yes. We register new domains in the customer's own name, through PKNIC for .pk names or a registrar for others. We are not a registrar ourselves.
What if the name is taken before you file my order?
You get a full refund. We aim to file on the same working day your payment arrives, and unpaid orders cancel after 48 hours.
