.pk domain meaning: what it is, its country and safety
The .pk domain meaning is simple: .pk is the internet country code for Pakistan, so it belongs to Pakistan the way .uk belongs to the United Kingdom. IANA lists PKNIC, based in Lahore, as the organisation that sponsors it. The ending tells you the country, not whether a site is safe.
What .pk stands for
The .pk domain meaning comes down to two letters: PK for Pakistan. Every country has a two-letter code on the internet, called a country code top-level domain, or ccTLD. Pakistan's is .pk. So a web address ending in .pk uses Pakistan's own extension.
IANA keeps the official list of internet extensions. It records .pk as a country-code domain with an active status, written in Latin script, which just means ordinary English letters.
If someone asks where a .pk domain is from, the answer is Pakistan. That is the country the extension belongs to. The website itself can still sit on a server anywhere in the world.
For a wider look at how names work, see our guide “What is a domain name?” and the .pk page.
Who runs .pk
IANA lists PKNIC, in Lahore, as the sponsoring organisation for .pk. PKNIC is the registry. It keeps the master record of who holds each .pk name and sets the rules. It runs what it calls a Shared Registry System for .pk names.
PKNIC fixes the registrant name when a domain is registered. So the name on the record matters from day one. We explain the registry's role in more detail at our guide “What is PKNIC? How the .pk registry works”.
We are not PKNIC. We are a small Pakistani company that files registrations for customers, in the customer's own name. To see how a registry differs from a registrar and a reseller, read our guide “Registry, registrar and reseller: who owns your domain?”.
The zones: .com.pk, .net.pk, .org.pk and more
A .pk address can sit in different zones. Think of them as folders under .pk, each meant for a different kind of owner.
Names placed directly under .pk, such as yourname.pk, need at least four characters. Names inside the zones, such as x.com.pk, can be shorter.
- com.pk: businesses and individuals. See the .com.pk page.
- net.pk: businesses in networking.
- org.pk: non-profit organisations.
- edu.pk: educational institutes. The institute's name has to show in the domain, and PKNIC keeps the name inactive until it checks the institute's documents.
- ac.pk: academic and educational use. PKNIC opened it on 15 May 2024 and does not ask for formal accreditation.
- web.pk: websites in general.
- fam.pk: families and individuals.
- gov.pk: the Government of Pakistan. Provinces and regions have their own endings, such as gop.pk for Punjab and gos.pk for Sindh.
Is a .pk domain safe?
The extension says nothing about safety. A .pk site can be honest or a scam, just like a .com site. Being Pakistani does not make a site trustworthy, and being unfamiliar does not make it dangerous.
Judge the site, not the ending. Check who is named as the owner. Look the domain up on the WHOIS lookup to see when it was registered. A shop that appeared last week and wants advance payment to a personal account deserves caution.
Look for a real business name, a phone or WhatsApp number that actually answers, and clear return terms. Watch out for addresses that copy a known brand with one letter changed.
For common tricks and how to avoid them, read our guide “Common domain scams in Pakistan and how to avoid them”.
Using .pk for email
A .pk domain works well as a Pakistani email address. If you own yourbrand.com.pk, you can have addresses like info@yourbrand.com.pk. The domain is only the name, though. You also need a mail service that runs the mailboxes, plus the right records pointing at it.
We do not sell hosting or Google Workspace, so we do not supply mailboxes. We register the domain in your name, and you pick the mail provider. Our guide at our guide “How to set up business email on your own domain” walks through the setup, and the DNS checker helps you confirm the records after you change them.
An address on your own domain looks more serious to customers than a free webmail address.
Can people outside Pakistan register a .pk domain?
PKNIC publishes two fee levels: one for registrants in Pakistan and one for registrants or registrars outside Pakistan. For Pakistan-based registrants the fee is Rs 2,100 per year from 1 August 2026, up from Rs 1,800. For those outside Pakistan it is USD 15.99 per year. PKNIC bills two years at a time, and you can pay up to ten years ahead.
Some zones, such as edu.pk and gov.pk, have their own eligibility checks, so the open zones like com.pk suit most buyers. Every application has to follow PKNIC's registration policy. You cannot take a name that someone else already holds or one PKNIC has reserved or blocked. It is also your job to make sure the name does not clash with another party's rights, such as a trademark.
Our own prices are on the price list, and many are quoted on WhatsApp. To start, check a name on the domain search, then use the order form. See our guide “How to register a .pk domain (PKNIC rules explained)” for the full steps, or our guide “.pk vs .com.pk vs .com: which domain should a Pakistani business pick?” to choose between endings.
