Hyphens and numbers in domain names: good or bad?

Usually a poor choice for a business name. Hyphens and numbers make a name harder to say, spell and remember, so customers may land on the wrong site. Google's published guidance sets no rule against them, and a hyphen is fine when it keeps a name readable or the plain version is taken.

The real problem is people, not Google

Most owners worry about search first. The bigger cost is human. A domain is something customers type, hear and pass on by word of mouth.

Think about a visiting card, a van, a shop signboard or a voice note on WhatsApp. If you must add 'dash' or 'number four' every time, some people will get it wrong. Each mistake can send a customer to a competitor with the plain name.

So judge a name by one test. Can a stranger hear it once and type it correctly? If yes, you are fine. If no, keep looking. Try /ideas/ or /domain-name-ideas-pakistan/ for fresh options.

Saying it aloud: where numbers hurt most

Numbers are the trickiest part. Is it 'four' or '4'? Is it 'to', 'two' or '2'? A name like 'shop4you' reads one way on screen and sounds like another on the phone.

Numbers do work in a few cases. The number may be part of your real brand name, such as a shop already known as '786' or a company with a number in its legal name. Or it may be a fixed part of a product, like a model name.

If none of that fits, spell the word out or pick a different name.

  • Spoken test: say the name to three friends and ask them to write it down.
  • If the answers differ, the name has a spelling problem.

Hyphens and brand confusion

A hyphen creates a quiet risk. If you own karachi-tours-co.com and another firm owns karachitoursco.com, customers who forget the dash may reach them instead. You could be advertising for a rival.

Hyphenated names can also look long and clumsy in an email address or on a printed card. Strings of three or four words joined by dashes are the usual offenders.

Before you register a hyphenated name, search the plain version. If it is active and belongs to someone else, think twice. You can search any extension at /domains/ and compare extensions at /extensions/.

SEO myths worth dropping

One myth says hyphens help rankings because they split keywords. Another says they hurt rankings. Google's public guidance backs neither claim.

Google does recommend hyphens over underscores to separate words in page URLs. That advice is about the address of a page. The page does not mention hyphens in domain names at all.

Google's guide to its ranking systems also describes an exact match domain system. It works so that a domain matching a search phrase does not get too much credit. So stuffing keywords into a domain is not a shortcut.

A better use of your time: good pages, clear contact details and customers who recommend you by name.

When a hyphen is fine

A hyphen is a reasonable choice in a few situations.

It can stop two words forming an unwanted third word, or make a long name easier to read.

It can also help when your exact name is taken and the owner will not sell, but the hyphenated version is clearly yours. And it suits a side project, a campaign page or a personal site, where typing accuracy matters less.

If your first choice is already owned, check the marketplace at /#browse to see if the owner is selling. Otherwise, a different extension may be cleaner than a hyphen. Our /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/ guide compares the options.

  • Keep it to one hyphen.
  • Keep each word short and common.
  • Say the whole name aloud before paying.

Check the rules, then register in your own name

Domain names follow technical rules about allowed characters. Hyphens and digits are generally allowed, but a name cannot start or end with a hyphen. Our /domain-name-rules/ page explains what is accepted.

Once you decide, we check availability live at /domains/ and register new names in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar. For .pk and .com.pk, PKNIC fixes the registrant name at registration and the minimum term is two years. Choose the name and the owner name carefully.

Prices are on /pricing/ and /pk-domain-price/. When you are ready, go to /order/. We aim to file the same working day the payment arrives.

Common questions

Do hyphens in a domain name hurt SEO?

Google's published guidance does not say a hyphen in a domain name is penalised. The practical risk is bigger: people forget the dash and type the wrong address.

Should I use numbers in my business domain?

Only if the number is part of your real brand. Otherwise people may not know whether to type the digit or the word, so spell it out or choose another name.

Is a hyphenated .pk domain better than a different extension?

Not always. If the plain name is free on .com.pk or .com, that is often easier to say and remember. Compare options at /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/.

Can I buy the plain version of a name instead?

If someone already owns it, you can check whether they list it for sale on our marketplace at /#browse. Payment is held in escrow.

How many hyphens are too many?

We suggest at most one. More than that makes the name long, hard to read aloud and easy to mistype.
