How to Choose a Domain Name for Your School, Academy or Coaching Centre

Start with the name on your registration papers

Parents search for a school by its name. So the safest domain is the name printed on your registration certificate, your fee vouchers and your signboard. If the school is called Example Grammar School, then examplegrammar or examplegrammarschool is easy to remember and easy to say over the phone.

Skip clever shortcuts that only staff understand. A parent who hears the name once should be able to type it without asking how it is spelled. Say the name aloud to three people and ask them to write it down. Every spelling mistake they make is a visitor you could lose.

The same rule applies to an academy or a coaching centre. A tuition academy that uses its real trading name looks more trustworthy than one that uses a string of keywords. All names in this article are made up, so check any name you like before you rely on it.

Who can use .edu.pk, and what PKNIC asks for

PKNIC runs the .pk space and has a separate page for .edu.pk. At the time of writing, it says the registrant must be a bona fide educational institute with sizeable active student enrolment, and the institute's name must appear in the domain name.

The domain is kept inactive after registration while PKNIC checks your papers. You send a letter of authorization signed by the Principal or Head on original letterhead, proof that the institute is registered and active with a government education body, and a CNIC copy of the person who signs. The domain is activated once the documents are verified.

That means a small home tuition setup or a new coaching centre may not qualify. Rules can change, so read the current page at pknic.net.pk before you apply. We do not decide eligibility; PKNIC does. The name also cannot be modified after registration, so spell it right the first time.

.edu.pk, .pk, .com.pk or .com: which one fits

If your school qualifies, .edu.pk signals a real educational institute. If it does not qualify, or you want a simpler path, a normal .pk, .com.pk or .com works for any school, academy or coaching centre.

Our price for a .pk or .com.pk is Rs 4,499 for two years, with renewal at Rs 4,499. A .com is Rs 2,199 for the first year, then Rs 4,199 a year. PKNIC states its own fee as Rs 2,100 a year for Pakistan-based registrants, billed two years at a time. Its edu page lists general .pk fees and no separate .edu.pk fee, so ask PKNIC about that.

Names directly under .pk need at least four characters. A .com is familiar to overseas parents and old students abroad. Many schools register a .pk and a .com together and point one to the other. Avoid names close to well-known school chains

Pakistan has many large school groups and college chains. A domain that looks like theirs can confuse parents. It can also lead to a complaint and the loss of the name after you have printed banners and prospectus pages.

PKNIC tells registrants that names already in use cannot be chosen, and that they must make sure their registration does not infringe another party's rights. So do your homework. Search the name on Google, Facebook and school directory sites. Look for similar spellings and for the same name used in a nearby city.

A shared word such as Grammar, Public, Model or Science is not a problem on its own. Copying a famous brand with one letter changed is. Add your own distinct part, such as the founder's family name or your area, and keep your logo different too. City and area patterns that work

Many good school names are taken in the .com space, so a place name can help. Parents often search by area, so name plus city is a natural pattern. For example, a made-up school could use brightstarlahore. Check every example for yourself, because these are only illustrations.

Here are patterns to try, in order of how cleanly they read. Add the city only if the plain name is taken. Do not add a city you do not serve, and do not stuff several city names into one domain. Email addresses parents can trust

A school that writes from a personal mailbox can look less formal. An address such as admissions@yourschool.pk tells a parent they have reached the school office. Parents are also asked to send fee challans and results by email, so a clear address helps.

Set up a few role-based addresses rather than personal ones: admissions, accounts, principal and info. When a teacher leaves, you change the mailbox owner and keep the address. This also stops staff using personal accounts for school business.

Check your shortlist before you pay

Write down five or six names and test them together. Our bulk domain checker lets you check many names at once, and the domain search shows prices for each ending. Look at the .pk, .com.pk and .com versions of your favourite name.

If a name is taken, look it up on the WHOIS lookup to see who holds it. Do not assume that a taken name is available to buy. Then decide whether to pick a different name, or use our watchlist to follow it.
