What is a premium domain, and is it worth it?

A premium domain is a name sold above the normal price because it is short, memorable or useful for business. It can be worth paying for when the name clearly helps you, but ask for the renewal price before you buy, because some premium names may renew at a higher rate too.

Two kinds of premium domain

People use the word premium for two different things. Mixing them up leads to expensive mistakes.

A registry premium is a name the registry has marked as valuable and prices higher. An aftermarket premium is a name someone already owns and wants to sell. The owner sets that price, and you can negotiate it.

  • Registry premium: the registry sets a higher price tier.
  • Aftermarket premium: the current owner sets the price.
  • Standard name: unregistered and sold at the ordinary fee.

Why renewals can cost more

The first-year price is only part of the story. Some registries charge a higher fee for premium names on renewal as well as on first registration. If so, you pay the higher rate every year.

Resale names often work differently. You pay the seller once, and the usual renewal fee for that extension then applies. This is common, but not a rule, so always check.

Before buying a registry premium, get the renewal price in writing. Multiply it by five years and see if the total still makes sense for your business.

What this means for .pk and .com.pk

PKNIC fixes the registrant name at registration, and the minimum term is two years. Its fee is Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026. Overseas registrants pay USD 15.99 per year.

PKNIC publishes one fee, with no separate premium tier on its fee page. If a name you want is already taken, the realistic route is to buy it from its current owner.

See /pk-domain/ and /pk-domain-price/ for more. Names that owners have put up for sale are listed in our marketplace at /#browse.

How to judge whether a name is worth the price

Do not pay because a name feels special. Pay because you can say what job it will do.

A premium makes sense when the name is short, easy to say over the phone and easy to spell after hearing it once. It also helps when it matches what you sell or the city you serve.

  • Can a customer spell it after hearing it once?
  • Does it describe your trade, product or city?
  • Is it free of hyphens, numbers and odd spellings?
  • Would you still want it if you changed your logo?
  • Does the five-year cost fit your budget?

Buying a premium safely

With a resale name, the main risk is paying and not receiving the domain. That is why our marketplace holds payment in escrow while the transfer is completed.

Ask the seller for the current registrar and agree the price, payment method and transfer steps in writing on WhatsApp.

If you are unsure what a name is worth, read /domain-value/ first. Then use /buy-domain/ or /order/. You can pay in rupees by bank transfer, Raast, JazzCash or Easypaisa.

When a standard name is the better choice

Many small businesses do better with a clear, ordinary name. If you are a freelancer or a new shop, the money saved can go into your website, photos and ads.

Try adding a service word or a city name to a short brand. Browse /ideas/ and /domain-name-ideas-pakistan/, then check any name live on /domains/.

If a name is available, we can register it in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar. If it is taken before we file, you get a full refund.

Common questions

Is a premium domain the same as a resale domain?

No. A registry premium is priced higher by the registry itself. A resale domain is already owned, and the owner chooses the price.

Will a premium domain cost more every year?

It can. Some registries charge a higher renewal fee for premium names, so ask before you buy. Resale names often renew at the normal fee, but check this too.

Is a .pk domain ever a premium?

PKNIC lists a single fee: Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026, billed in two-year periods. A name that is already taken must be bought from its owner.

How do I avoid being cheated when buying a domain?

Use escrow so payment is held until the transfer is done. On our marketplace, the owner is paid after the domain moves to you.

Is a premium domain good for SEO?

A good name helps people remember you, but the domain alone does not decide search rankings. Useful content matters more.
