Does your domain name affect Google rankings?
Only a little, and not in the way many people hope. Google's John Mueller has said a keyword in a domain does not make a site more relevant for that word, and a 2012 update reduced low-quality exact-match domains. Pick a name customers can remember and trust, then put your effort into useful content and a good site.
What an exact-match domain is
An exact-match domain, or EMD, is a name that is the same as a search phrase. If people search for "cheap tailors lahore", the EMD would be something like cheaptailorslahore.com.pk.
Years ago, many site owners bought such names because they believed the keywords in the address pushed the page up in results. That belief led to many thin sites built only to catch searches.
Today the idea is mostly a myth. A keyword in your domain may help a person see what you sell, but it is not a shortcut to the first page. To see how names are valued, read our guide at /domain-value/.
What Google's EMD update did
On 28 September 2012, Google's Matt Cutts announced a change aimed at low-quality exact-match domains. He said it would noticeably affect about 0.6 percent of English-US queries.
The key point is who was targeted: low-quality sites with keyword-matching names. The change was not aimed at good sites that happen to have a keyword in the name.
The lesson for you is simple. A keyword name cannot carry a weak website. A strong site can use one, but the name will not do the work.
What Google staff say about keywords in domains
Google's John Mueller has said that a keyword in a domain name does not make a site more relevant than others for that word. He has said the same about keywords in extensions such as .jobs.
He has also pointed out that a keyword-heavy name can become a burden if your business changes direction.
These are staff comments, not a formal rulebook. Even so, they match what the 2012 update showed. Do not pay extra for a name only because it holds a keyword.
What matters more than the name
Rankings come from the quality of your pages, not the label on your address. Focus on the things you control.
Think of the domain as your shop sign. It helps people find and trust you, but the goods inside decide whether they come back.
- Pages that answer what your customer actually asks, in plain language.
- A fast site that works well on a phone.
- Links and mentions from other real sites and local listings.
- A Google Business Profile if you serve a city or area.
- Clear contact details, so customers know you are a real business.
- Steady updates, rather than one launch and silence.
Brandable name or keyword name?
A brandable name is short, easy to say and easy to spell. Customers can pass it on by word of mouth or on WhatsApp without a mistake. It also stays useful if you add new services later.
A keyword name tells people what you do at once, which can help a local shop. But it can be long and awkward if you change direction.
A sensible middle path is a short name with a clear meaning, with your keywords used on the pages themselves. For ideas, try /ideas/ or read /domain-name-ideas-pakistan/. Check the rules for valid names at /domain-name-rules/.
Choosing .pk, .com.pk or .com
Pick the extension your customers expect. A .pk or .com.pk signals a Pakistani business, while a .com suits work for clients abroad. Compare them at /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/.
For .pk and .com.pk, PKNIC fixes the registrant name at registration, so choose the right owner from the start. The minimum term is two years. PKNIC's fee is Rs 2,100 per year for Pakistan-based registrants from 1 August 2026, and USD 15.99 per year for overseas ones.
You can search any extension at /domains/ and see our prices at /pricing/. We register the name in your own name through PKNIC or a registrar.
Common questions
Do exact-match domains still rank better?
Not because of the name alone. Google's 2012 update targeted low-quality exact-match sites, and Mueller has said a keyword in a domain does not make a site more relevant. Good content and a good site still decide results.
Is it bad to use keywords in my domain?
No. A keyword can make the name clearer to customers. Just do not expect it to lift a thin website, and remember it may suit you less if your business changes direction.
Does .pk or .com.pk rank higher than .com in Pakistan?
We have not found an official Google statement that one extension ranks higher than another. Choose the one your customers trust and expect, and see /pk-vs-com-pk-vs-com/.
Should I change my domain to a keyword name to rank better?
Usually not. Moving a site is hard and can disturb your traffic, and the new name will not give you a ranking boost on its own.
Can SastiDomains help me find a name?
Yes. Use /ideas/ for suggestions and /domains/ to check availability live. If a name is already owned, our marketplace at /#browse lists names whose owners want to sell, with payment held in escrow.
